European Society Magazines

Author: Catharina Goedecke, Vera Koester

ChemPubSoc Europe, an organization of 16 continental European chemical societies, was founded in the late 1990s. Since then, ChemPubSoc Europe has published successful peer-reviewed scientific journals, such as Chemistry – A European Journal and ChemBioChem.

Publishing in ChemPubSoc Europe journals provides societies with royalty payments based on article downloads and the countries of the submitting authors. ChemPubSoc Europe allows its member societies to work together to support and advance the chemical sciences. This experience can also support the membership magazines of the societies.

To ensure greater collaboration between each other, on March 23 and 24, Editors of national magazines from nine of the sixteen societies met under the motto ChemPubSoc Europe working together, experimenting together, sharing success. Dr. Eva E. Wille, VP & Executive Director, and Dr. Vera Koester, Editor-in-Chief ChemViews Magazine/ChemistryViews.org, both Wiley-VCH, Weinheim, Germany, opened the meeting hosted at the publishing house. The editors/society representatives and colleagues from the publishing house listened to presentations on ChemPubSoc Europe, publishing highlights and future trends, talked about their magazines and newsletters, opportunities and challenges, and exchanged ideas and best practices in lively discussions.

The Open Access (OA) market generated over 300 million USD in 2015. OA is growing within Wiley publications and represented 2.8 % of all articles published by ChemPubSoc Europe in 2016. It is offered in ChemistryOpen, the completely Open Access journal of ChemPubSoc Europe, and as an option (Online Open) in all other ChemPubSoc Europe journals.
