Timothy Noël, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, has been awarded the DECHEMA Prize 2017 in recognition of his pioneering work on continuous photochemical conversion in microfluidic systems. The prize is endowed with 20,000 EUR and is awarded annually for outstanding research work in the fields of technical chemistry, process engineering, biotechnology, and chemical apparatus. The award was presented at the ACHEMA forum for chemical engineering, process engineering, and biotechnology in Frankfurt, Germany, on June 14, 2018.

Noël’s research focuses on the development of new catalytic strategies and technologies for chemical synthesis. His interests include continuous-flow microreactors, photochemistry, and electrochemistry. He aims to build bridges between chemical engineering and organic synthetic chemistry.

Timothy Noël studied industrial chemical engineering at Katholieke Hogeschool Sint-Lieven, Ghent, Belgium, where he received his Master’s degree in 2004. He completed his Ph.D. in chemistry at Ghent University in 2009 under the supervision of Johan Van der Eycken. Noël then became a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA, working with Stephen L. Buchwald. He joined the Eindhoven University of Technology in 2012 as Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2017.

Among other honors, Noël received a Fulbright Hays Award in 2010, the Incentive Award for Young Researchers 2011 from the Comité de Gestion du Bulletin des Sociétés Chimiques Belges, and a Marie Curie Career Integration Grant from the European Commission in 2013.
