Professor Shigeyoshi Inoue, Technical University Munich, Germany, has received the Carl Duisberg Memorial Prize 2017 from the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society). The prize is awarded to chemists under 40 years of age who do not hold a position as Full Professor but have distinguished themselves through original work.
The award includes a 7,500 EUR endowment and was presented at the Chemiedozententagung 2017 in Marburg, Germany, on March 13, 2016. Inoue was honored for his high-quality work on low-valent compounds of main group elements.
Shigeyoshi Inoue studied chemistry at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, where he received his Ph.D. under the supervision of Akira Sekiguchi in 2008. From 2008 to 2010, he was a research fellow with Matthias Drieß at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. He was Sofja Kovalevskaja Research Group Leader and Guest Professor there from 2010 to 2015. In 2015, Inoue joined the Technical University of Munich as Professor of Silicon Chemistry.
Among other honors, Shigeyoshi Inoue has received the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2010, an ERC Starting Grant from the European Research Council in 2014, and the Chemical Society of Japan Award for Young Chemists in 2015.
Inoue’s research focuses on low-valent main group compounds, especially of groups 13, 14, and 15, and their reactivities and uses in synthesis. His aim is to find new applications for these compounds with unusual structures and unique electronic properties.
