On September 10, 2017, the German Chemical Society (Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker; GDCh) celebrated the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft (German Chemical Society), one of its two predecessor organizations. On September 11, to mark this anniversary, an Angewandte Fest Symposium was held at the Freie Universität Berlin. At this event, eleven superb speakers illuminated modern aspects of chemistry, as well as the interactions and conflicts between science and the great problems of modern society. During the Symposium it was announced that on October 1, Neville Compton (pictured right) took over as Editor-in-Chief of Angewandte Chemie, a position held by Peter Gölitz (left) for 35 years. In a joint editorial, Alois Fürstner, Chairman of the Editorial Board of Angewandte Chemie, gives extracts from his speech, Peter Gölitz departing words in his first letter as “Editor Emeritus”, and Neville Compton gives introductory words. For Peter Gölitz “working for Angewandte Chemie was a very enjoyable journey”. During his editorship, “scientific publishing experienced so many changes. “I was fortunate that we could grab opportunities and lead developments in quite a number of instances.”

Neville Compton has been working for Angewandte Chemie for over 25 years. He has played a key role in the decision-making and implementation of changes. “Peter’s are certainly big shoes to fill, but I am looking forward to the challenge”. “There is no reason to doubt that this will be a success!” according to Alois Fürstner.
