The Hermann Staudinger Prize 2016 has been awarded to Professor Klaus Müllen, Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, Germany, by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society). The prize was presented at the biennial meeting of the GDCh’s Division of Macromolecular Chemistry in Halle, Germany, on September 11, 2016.
The award honors outstanding contributions to polymer chemistry. Müllen receives it for his work on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and on 2D macromolecules for electronic components, as well as his dedication to macromolecular chemistry.
Klaus Müllen studied chemistry at the University of Cologne, Germany, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Basel, Switzerland, in 1971. After postdoctoral research and his habilitation at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, Müllen joined the University of Cologne as Professor in 1979 and moved to the University of Mainz in 1984. Since 1989, he is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research.
His research interests include graphenes and carbon materials, new polymer-forming reactions, multi-dimensional polymers with complex shape-persistent architectures, functional polymeric networks, dyes and pigments, molecular materials with liquid crystalline properties for electronic and optoelectronic devices, biosynthetic hybrids, and nanocomposites.
Among many other honors, Müllen has received the ACS Award in Polymer Chemistry from the American Chemical Society in 2011, the Adolf von Baeyer Medal from the GDCh in 2013, the van’t Hoff Award from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences in 2015, and several honorary doctorates.
Müllen is a Member of the German Academy Leopoldina and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He served as President of the German Chemical Society in 2008 and 2009. Additionally, he is a Member of the Editorial Boards of several scientific journals, including Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics, Chemistry Letters, and BioNanoMaterials. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Polymer Bulletin and as Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
