The Liebig Memorial Medal 2016 has been awarded to Professor Markus Antonietti, Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Potsdam, Germany, and University of Potsdam, by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society). The prize was presented at the 129th Meeting of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Naturforscher und Ärzte (GDNÄ, Society of German Natural Scientists and Physicians), on September 10, 2016.

The award honors Antonietti’s outstanding research at the interface of polymer chemistry and nanoscience, including his contributions to chemical energy storage and sustainable chemistry.

Markus Antonietti studied chemistry at the University of Mainz, Germany, where he received his Ph.D. in 1985 under the supervision of Hans Sillescu. He finished his habilitation in physical chemistry, also in Mainz, in 1990, and became Associate Professor there in 1991. In 1992, Antonietti joined the University of Marburg, Germany, as Full Professor. Since 1993, he works in Potsdam, Germany, as Director for Colloid Chemistry at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces and Full Professor at the University of Potsdam.

Among other honors, Antonietti has received the Goldschmidt–Elhuyar Award of the Real Sociedad Espanola de Quimica (RSEQ, Spanish Chemical Society) in 2003, the Grignard–Wittig Award of the Société Chimique de France (SCF, French Chemical Society) in 2011, and several honorary doctorates. He is a Member of the Editorial Board of a number of scientific journals, including Colloid and Polymer ScienceMaterials Horizons, Particle & Particle Systems Characterization, Progress in Polymer Science, and Small. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).
