The 5th Polymer International–IUPAC Award for Creativity in Applied Polymer Science or Polymer Technology has been awarded to Professor Richard Hoogenboom, Ghent University, Belgium, at the 46th IUPAC World Polymer Congress (Macro 2016) in Istanbul, Turkey. The award honors polymer researchers under the age of 40, and includes 5,000 USD for expenses and travel to the World Polymer Congress.

Richard Hoogenboom studied chemistry and chemical engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. There, he also finished his Ph.D. in organic and polymer chemistry under the supervision of Ulrich S. Schubert in 2005. He worked as Project Leader for the Dutch Polymer Institute, Eindhoven, from 2005 to 2008, and as Senior Product Developer at Dolphys Medical BV, Eindhoven, from 2007 to 2008. After postdoctoral research at RWTH Aachen University, Germany, and Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands, Hoogenboom joined Ghent University as Associate Professor in 2010. He was promoted to Full Professor in 2014.

Professor Hoogenboom’s research is focused on the development of synthetic structures with controlled ordering and/or self-assembly resulting in functional systems. His interests include supramolecular polymers, “smart” responsive polymer structures, and poly(2-oxazoline)s as pseudo-polypeptides.
