Professor Helmut Schwarz, Technische Universität Berlin (TUB), Germany, has been awarded the Karl Ziegler Prize by the Karl Ziegler Foundation and the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCH, German Chemical Society). The award is one of the highest German honors in the field of chemistry. It was presented at the GDCh Wissenschaftsforum 2015 in Dresden, Germany, on August 30, 2015.
Professor Schwarz is honored for his work on elucidating reaction mechanisms and his developments in mass spectrometry. His research interests cover diverse subject such as organometallic chemistry, catalysis, physical organic chemistry, and theoretical chemistry. He has made important contributions to the understanding of important catalytic processes.
Helmut Schwarz, born in 1943 in Nickenich, Germany, studied chemistry at Technische Universität Berlin (TUB), Germany, and received his Ph.D. in 1972. He went on to complete his Habilitation in 1974 and in 1978 he was appointed Professor of Chemistry at TUB, where he has remained since. Schwarz is President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation since January 2008.
Among many other honors, Professor Schwarz has received the Liebig Medal by the GDCh in 1998, the Prelog Medal in Gold from ETH Zürich in 2000, the Blaise Pascal Medal in Chemistry of the European Academy of Sciences in 2011, the World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists (WATOC) Schrödinger medal in 2015, and numerous honorary doctorates.
