The KCS–Wiley Young Chemist Awards are presented annually by the Korean Chemical Society (KCS) and John Wiley & Sons. They are awarded to two young Korean scientists under the age of 40, who hold a Ph.D. degree, for outstanding achievements and contributions to the community. The award winners receive a certificate and a book voucher.
This year’s awards were presented to Associate Professor Bong June Sung, Department of Chemistry, Sogang University, and Associate Professor Jae-Min Oh, Department of Chemistry and Medical Chemistry, Yonsei University, at the KCS general meeting, Gwangju, on October 16.

Bong June Sung studied at Seoul National University, South Korea, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in 1999 and his Master’s in 2001. He received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, WI, USA, under the supervision of Prof. Arun Yethiraj. After a year as a post-doctoral researcher there, he was appointed assistant professor at Sogang University, Seoul. He holds his current position as associate professor since 2011. His research interests include both materials and biophysical chemistry, e.g. structure and dynamics of carbon nanotube/polymer composites, dynamics and structures of fluids in porous materials such as polymer gels, dynamics and reactions of proteins and lipids in plasma membranes of cells, and diffusion of peptides and ions in crowding environments.
