Dr. Oliver Reich, innoFSPEC Potsdam, Germany, has been awarded the 2014 Bunsen–Kirchhoff Award by the Working Group for Applied Spectroscopy in the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh; German Chemical Society). The award, sponsored by PerkinElmer, is presented annually to a younger scientist for outstanding achievements in analytical spectroscopy. The winner receives 2,500 EUR. The award was presented at the Analytica Conference, Munich, Germany, on April 3, 2014, where Oliver Reich also gave a presentation.
Reich is honored for his pioneering work in the field of photon density waves (PDW ) spectroscopy, a fiberoptical sensing approach for the characterization of the absorption and scattering properties of a substance. PDW spectroscopy enables the monitoring of physical and chemical processes, such as enzymatic reactions, the synthesis of nano-and microparticles, and the investigation of the influence of temperature on dairy products, in real time.
Oliver Reich studied chemistry at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg, Germany, and obtained his Ph.D. from Potsdam University, Germany, in 2005 under the guidance of Professor Hans-Gerd Löhmannsröben. In 2006, he started a junior research group that focused on applications of PDW spectroscopy. Since 2009, he has been leader of the research group “Innovative Fiber Sensors” at innoFSPEC Potsdam, the center for innovative fiberoptical spectroscopy and sensing, a joint project of Potsdam University and Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics, Potsdam, Germany.
