The KCS–Wiley Young Chemist Awards are presented annually by the Korean Chemical Society (KCS) and John Wiley & Sons. They are awarded to two young Korean scientists under the age of 40, who hold a Ph.D. degree, for outstanding achievements and contributions to the community. The award winners receive a certificate and a book voucher.
This year’s awards were presented to Associate Professor Yousung Jung, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Daejeon, and Associate Professor Soojin Park, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), at the KCS general meeting, Changwon, on October 17.
Yousung Jung studied at Seoul National University, Korea, gaining a Bachelor’s degree in Oceanography in 1997 and a Master’s in Chemistry in 1999. After obtaining an M.S. in Chemistry from Iowa State University, USA, in 2001, he went to University of California, Berkeley, CA, USA, were he gained his Ph.D. He carried out postdoctoral research under the guidance of Nobel Laureate Rudolph Marcus at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Pasadena, CA, USA, from 2005 until 2009. Upon returning to Korea in 2009, he took up the position of Assistant Professor at KAIST and then was promoted to his present position of Associate Professor in 2012. From 2010 until 2011 he spent a year as a visiting Associate at Caltech.
His research is focused on electronic structure theory, advanced materials simulations, and energy and environmental materials.
Soojin Park studied chemistry at Kyunghee University, Seoul, Korea, and graduated in 1996. He then went to Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Korea, where he obtained an M.S. and then a Ph.D. in 2003. After working for Samsung Electronics, Korea, for a year he returned to POSTECH as a postdoctoral researcher. From 2006 to 2009 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, University of Massachusetts (UMass), Amherst, MA, USA. He returned to Korea in 2009 to take up his current position as an Associate Professor at UNIST.
His research interests include fabrication of block copolymer templates for data storage media, long-range order of block copolymer thin films, preparation of block copolymer templates for solar cell devices, synthesis of electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries, and micro- and nanopatterning using lithography.
