Student Mobility Awards Presented

The European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE) Student Mobility Awards recognize the value of international mobility during the early years of higher academic study. They are presented biennally to students who – through the combination of academic and cross-cultural experiences – demonstrate ambition, appreciation of international projects in chemical engineering, and contribution to ongoing research.

This year, the EFCE has chosen to award five students. The awards were presented at the congress dinner of the 9th European Congress of Chemical Engineering (ECCE) on April 24, 2013, at the Blue Lagoon in the Hague, the Netherlands.

Sandra Temmel – 1st Prize (€2000)

Sandra Temmel studied chemical and bioengineering at Friedrich-Alexander-University, Erlangen, Germany, and has spent time studying in Nanjing, China, and at the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico. From 2011–2012, she pursued her Master’s degree at CSIRO, Melbourne, Australia, resulting in a thesis on enhanced separation of cream in a megasonic cubic reactor. She is currently continuing her research at the Paul-Scherrer-Institut in Zürich, Switzerland, with doctoral studies into fuel cells.

Alessandra Pennati – 2nd Prize (€1500)

Alessandra Pennati studied at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and has spent two years at the Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen. There she specialized in modeling of chemical processes and process design and achieved her first Master’s degree. Her thesis on the synthesis of water networks developed a unique methodology applied as a case study to the treatment of oil refinery wastewater.

Reyes Aibar Abad – 2nd Prize (€1500)

Reyes Aibar Abad is an undergraduate of chemical engineering at the University of Zaragoza, Spain. She spent one year of her degree as a student at Tampere University of Technology, Finland, as part of the Erasmus exchange program.

Marta Bilbao – 3rd Prize (€1000)

Marta Bilbao embarked on her first degree in the School of Engineering and Architecture at the University of Zaragoza, Spain, before completing her studies – thanks to the Erasmus program – at Imperial College, London, UK. The following year, she wrote a Master’s thesis in chemical engineering having gained an internship at the Brussels headquarters of Procter & Gamble, Belgium.

Emmanouil Papadakis – 3rd Prize (€1000)

Emmanouil Papadakis obtained his Diploma in Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, before continuing his studies at Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen. There he obtained a Master’s degree in chemical and biochemical engineering. His research interests include the rheology of complex fluids and he has worked on the rheology behavior of dairy sauces for leading food manufacturer, Arla Group.
