Professor Raphael David Levine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, has been awarded the Gold Medal of the Israel Chemical Society (ICS). It is the highest award presented by the ICS.
Levine is awarded for his fundamental contributions to the understanding of chemical reactivity on the molecular-scale, in particular to the role of energy and for discovering that the methods of thermodynamics can be applied to nonequilibrium few-atom systems.
The Gold Medal was presented at the opening session of the 78th Annual Meeting of the ICS on February 12, 2013 in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Raphael David Levine received his M.Sc. in Chemistry in 1960 from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. He completed his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1964 at Nottingham University, UK, before gaining a D. Phil. in 1966 from Oxford University, UK. He joined the faculty of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1968, where he is currently Max Born Professor of Natural Philosophy.
