Professor Mordecai Rubin, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel, passed away on Sunday December 9, 2012. Rubin was one of the founding fathers of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Technion. He was a world leader in the field of organic photochemistry, particularly that of polyketones. In recent years he turned to the history of science and in 2001 received an outstanding paper award from the American Chemical Society (ACS) for his series of articles on the history of ozone.
Mordecai Rubin was born in 1926 in Boston, USA. He served in the US Army from 1944–1946 and then in the Haganah, the forerunner of the Israel Defense Forces, from 1947–1949. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, and Harvard University, USA. He received his Ph.D. in 1954 from Columbia University, USA, and did postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin, USA, from 1956–1958. He started an independent career at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, USA, and then was a Weizmann Fellow at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel, before joining the Technion in 1966. He remained at the Technion until his retirement in 1994.
