Professor Nazario Martín, Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Spain, has received the 2012 Gold Medal and Research Award, the highest distinction given by the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ). The award includes a prize of €10,000 funded by the Business Federation of the Spanish Chemical Industry (FEIQUE). It was presented at the Chemistry Day of the Chemistry and Society Forum in Madrid, Spain, on November 15, 2012.
Nazario Martín studied at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Spain, where he received his Ph.D. in 1984 under the supervision of Carlos Seoane and José L. Soto. After a year working in research at the pharmaceutical company Juste S.A.Q.F., Spain, he returned to the UCM in 1985 as a teaching assistant. He carried out postdoctoral work with Michael Hanack at the University of Tübingen, Germany, from 1987–1988 and with Fred Wudl at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA, in 1994. He was promoted to associate professor at UCM in 1989 and to full professor in 2001. He is currently full professor of Organic Chemistry at UCM and vice-director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Nanoscience of Madrid (IMDEA-Nanoscience).
From 2006–2012, Martín served as the President of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ). He is a member of the International Advisory Boards of The Journal of Organic Chemistry, ChemSusChem, ChemPlusChem, Chemical Society Reviews, and Chemical Communications.
Professor Martín’s research interests span a range of targets with emphasis on the molecular and supramolecular chemistry of carbon nanostructures such as fullerenes, carbon nanotubes and graphenes, π-conjugated systems as molecular wires and electroactive molecules, in the context of electron transfer processes, photovoltaics applications, and nanoscience.
