On July 9th François Diederich celebrates his 60th birthday. Diederich is a well-respected chemist in the field of organic chemistry and is the chairman of the editorial board of Angewandte Chemie.
François Diederich studied chemistry and gained his Ph.D. from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. From 1979–1981, he carried out postdoctoral research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), USA, with Orville Chapman. He moved to the Max Planck Institute for Medicinal Research, Heidelberg, Germany, in 1981 as a research associate. After completing his habilitation there in 1985, he returned to UCLA initially as associate professor then as a full professor in 1989. In 1992 he joined the ETH Zurich, Switzerland, where he is currently Professor of Organic Chemistry.
Diederich serves on the advisory board of Chemistry—A European Journal and has been the chairman of the editorial board of Angewandte Chemie since 2004. His research interests include molecular recognition and structure-based drug design, carbon-rich molecular architectures and optoelectronic materials, supramolecular chemistry on surfaces, and medicinal chemistry.
