The well-known and respected chemist, Emanuel Vogel, passed away on 31st March 2011 after a long illness.
Born in 1927, Vogel studied chemistry in Karlsruhe, Germany, graduating in 1952. After his Habilitation in 1961, he took over from Nobel laureate Kurt Alder as Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Cologne, Germany. He served in this position for 35 years until his retirement.
His work on the chemistry of aromatic compounds, in particular annulenes and porphyrin analogs, gathered international attention resulting in numerous honors. He was awarded the Emil-Fischer-Medal of the GDCh and the Robert B. Woodward Award for his research on porphyrins.
After his retirement, Vogel remained an active member of the chemical community, attending lectures and those who knew him personally, will remember a friendly, meticulous individual who inspired many and will be sadly missed.
