Professor Katharina Kohse-Höinghaus, University of Bielefeld, Germany, celebrates her 60th birthday on December 18th. Professor Kohse-Höinghaus is a leading researcher in the field of combustion chemistry and laser analysis of reacting systems. She has served as the President of the Bunsen Society, is President-Elect of the International Combustion Institute and was selected by International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and American Chemical Society as a “Distinguished Woman in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering”, as part of the IYC2011 celebrations.
Kohse-Höinghaus studied chemistry at the Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, where she attained her doctorate in 1978. She obtained her habilitation in 1992 from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, after spending periods at the German Aerospace Center, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, USA, and the Molecular Physics Laboratory at SRI International, USA. She spent a year at the French aerospace lab, ONERA, Paris, before joining the faculty at the University of Bielefeld as a full professor in 1994. In 2008, she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and in 2007 she received the Cross of the Order of Merit of the German Federal Republic.
