The International Medal for Materials Science of the Materials Research Society of India was awarded to Professor Martin Jansen, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, Stuttgart, Germany, and Editor of ZAAC (Zeitschrift für Anorganische und Allgemeine Chemie; Journal of Inorganic and General Chemistry), for his outstanding creative contributions to solid state and materials chemistry.
Martin Jansen completed his PhD in 1973 with Rudolf Hoppe at the University of Gießen, Germany, where he went on to complete his habilitation in 1978. He took up a position at the University of Hannover in 1981 and moved to the University of Bonn in 1987. In 1998 he became director of the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart.
His research is focused on solid state inorganic chemistry, particularly the structural chemistry of non-metal and metal oxides. His research topics include binary and ternary oxides, superconducting oxides, ionic conductors, oxidic ceramics and pigments, endohedral fullerenes and fullerides as well as amorphous nitridic networks. He invented oxidation- and high-temperature-stable Si/B/N/C ceramics as new materials for the efficient use of thermal energy. More recently, Martin Jansen attracted attention with his theoretical works on structure prediction and his concept for syntheses planning.
