Professor Severus Snape is a teacher at the fictional Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter book series written by British author J. K. Rowling. He also is head of the school’s Slytherin house and often favors the students assigned to this house. As Potions Master, he teaches the art of potion making—the wizarding equivalent of chemistry. He is also deeply interested in the “dark arts”, i.e., magic with evil intention. He is portrayed as an intelligent, powerful wizard with a keen analytical mind.
Although not the main enemy in the seven-book series, Snape’s hostility towards the protagonist Harry Potter and his friends is a recurring obstacle in their adventures. His knowledge of secret spells and potions, however, is of great help more than once. In the war against the dark wizard Lord Voldemort, Snape’s double life as a member of the (good) Order of the Phoenix and as an (evil) Death Eater plays a vital role and, until the end of the story, the reader can never be quite sure which side he is on.
