The 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has been released by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA, is ranked first for the 15th consecutive year. Stanford University, USA, kept the second place. The University of Cambridge, UK, gained one rank compared to last year’s ranking and joins the top three, which makes it the highest ranked European university. The top Asian institution is the University of Tokyo in 24th place.

- number of alumni winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
- number of staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
- number of highly cited researchers
- number of articles published in Nature and Science
- number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded (SCIE) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SCCI)
- per capita academic performance
