A sea trial in Northern Ireland measures long time performance of the electricity production of the Deep Green ‘underwater kite’ marine power plant. Deep Green, developed by marine energy technology company Minesto, is the only known power plant that works cost-effectively in low velocity tidal and ocean currents. The challenge has been that the currents are too slow and the sites too deep for most available marine power plants.
The Deep Green demonstrator has a 3 m long wing. It is tethered to an offshore control room in Strangford Lough, Ireland. A specifically equipped RIB boat (Rigid (Hull) Inflatable Boat) enables safe and cost effective offshore operations.
The first full scale installation of Deep Green is planned for 2015.
