Professor Ferdi Schüth, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, received the Wöhler Prize for processes that conserve resources at the GDCh Wissenschaftsforum in Bremen. Here, he talks about his work on catalysts for alternative fuels. 

In 2003, he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), which is the highest honour awarded in German research. His research involves the synthesis and characterization of inorganic materials with applications in the heterogeneous catalysis of CO oxidation and energy related conversions (i.e. methane activation, biomass conversion, and catalyzed hydrogen storage).
