Markus Antonietti, Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Potsdam, and University of Potsdam, Germany, celebrates his 65th birthday on February 6, 2025.

Markus Antonietti’s current research deals with macromolecular systems in sustainable chemistry, i.e., for catalysis and electrocatalysis, for artificial photosynthesis, and for carbon sequestration and soil remediation.

Markus Antonietti studied physics and chemistry at the University of Mainz, Germany, where he received his Ph.D. in polymer chemistry in 1985 under the supervision of Hans Sillescu. He finished his habilitation in physical chemistry in Mainz in 1990 and became Associate Professor there. In 1991, Antonietti joined the University of Marburg, Germany, as Full Professor. Since 1993, he serves as Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces and since 1995 as Full Professor at the University of Potsdam.

Among many other honors, Markus Antonietti has received the Goldschmidt–Elhuyar Award of the Real Sociedad Espanola de Quimica (RSEQ, Spanish Chemical Society) in 2003, the Grignard–Wittig Award of the Société Chimique de France (SCF, French Chemical Society) in 2011, the Liebig Medal of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society) in 2016, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2018, the Hermann-Staudinger-Prize for macromolecular chemistry of the GDCh in 2020, and several honorary doctorates. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).
