Professor Holger Braunschweig, University of Würzburg, Germany, has received the Alfred Stock Memorial Award from the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society). The award was presented at the annual Lecture Meeting of the Wöhler-Vereinigung, the Inorganic Chemistry Division of the GDCh, in Berlin, Germany, on September 26, 2016.
The Alfred Stock Memorial Award honors outstanding research in the field of inorganic chemistry. Holger Braunschweig is recognized for his work on novel compounds that combine main group elements, specifically boron, with transition metals.
Holger Braunschweig studied chemistry at RWTH Aachen University, Germany, where he received his Ph.D. in 1990. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher with Michael F. Lappert at the University of Sussex, UK, and then returned to Aachen, where he completed his habilitation in 1997. Braunschweig was appointed as Privatdozent at RWTH Aachen in 1998, as Senior Lecturer at Imperial College, London, UK, in 2000, and as Reader at Imperial College in 2002. He then joined the University of Würzburg as Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry. His research interests include metal-boron bonds, boron heterocycles, borylene-based functionalization, and organometallic polymers.
Among other honors, Professor Braunschweig has received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Award from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in 2009 and the RSC Main Group Chemistry Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2014. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Member of the Bavarian Academy of Science and the Leopoldina Academy of Science, and a Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Dalton Transactions.
