On 1 January 2012, Professor Kazuyuki Tatsumi, Nagoya University, Japan, will become President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). The current President, Professor Nicole Moreau, Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Paris (ENSCP), France, will become past president and remain an officer and a member of the Bureau for a period of two years. Kazuyuki Tatsumi’s previous role of Vice President will be taken on by Mark C. Cesa, INEOS Nitriles, Chicago, USA.
Kazuyuki Tatsumi (pictured) obtained his B.Sc. from Osaka University, Japan, in 1971 majoring in chemical engineering, and completed his Ph.D. in 1976 studying on theoretical inorganic chemistry. In 1994 he took up his current position as professor at Nagoya University, Japan, and was appointed as the Director of the Research Center for Materials Science in 2003. His research interest focuses on the chemistry of transition metal chalcogenides and the interface between cluster chemistry and bio-inorganic chemistry.
Nicole Moreau received an M.S. in physical chemistry from the University of Paris, Sorbonne, France. She obtained a Ph.D. in physical sciences in 1967 from Orsay University, France. Since 1999, Moreau has been a professor ENSCP, where she is the leader of the Laboratory of Biochemistry. She designed the first purification of enzymes that inactivate aminoglycoside antibiotics by using affinity chromatography and continues to study the mode of action of antibiotics and the ways bacteria can resist them.
Mark C. Cesa is a physical organic/organometallic chemist with research interests in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis and organic reaction kinetics and mechanisms. He studied chemistry at Princeton University, USA, where he earned his M.S. in 1977. He gained his Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, under the supervision of Professor Charles P. Casey. Cesa is a Process Chemistry Consultant with INEOS Nitriles, Chicago, USA, where he is responsible for process chemistry research and support for INEOS Nitriles manufacturing plants.
